The Death

Faisal was the most renowned tailor in all the land. He lived with his wife, Miriam. As they were at a wedding procession, that of Ali Baba and Morgiana, they met an old friend. Bacbac, the court jester. In fact, he was the Sultan's favorite jester.

Bacbac was a hunchback, but he loved being one. He found it and almost everything else amusing. He could make a joke out of anything. Faisal and Miriam invited him over for fish stew, and Bacbac never refused free food.

At dinner, Bacbac was in the middle of a great joke, when he stopped talking. Shortly afterward, he went face first into his stew. "Bacbac?" Faisal said. Miriam went over and felt his neck.

"I think he's dead." she said looking horrified.

"No, can't be, he's only joking." Faisal said, sounding uncertain.

"I think he's really dead. Must've been fish bones." she said.

"Well, let's take him to Dr. Ezra." he said.

"I don't think that will help." she said, "He's past that kind of help."

"So we'll leave him on their doorstep." he said, "The authorities would blame us if they found out. We're foreigners."

"All right," she said, "We'll leave him on Dr. Ezra's doorstep." she said.

The two hoisted him out into the street and began making their way to Dr. Ezra's, who lived around the corner.
